A MESSAGE FROM PRINCIPAL EDWARD OWUSU

Clarksburg High School Students, Staff, and Families,

HAPPY NEW YEAR!!! The spirit of Clarksburg, emphasizing that Be Good, Do Good mantra carries us into this year with purpose and direction. It's a new year and I am thrilled to be writing you with news and information to kick off the new calendar year! It's will be a full and regular week at CHS.

To begin, MCPS has provided updated guidance as we return to in-person learning on Monday, January 3. Please read the information linked HERE. (Please make sure to also read the rest of the newsletter.)

At CHS we continue to highlight the importance of being safe while in a pandemic. The following are reminders of actions currently in progress:

  • Suspension of all Afterschool Non Athletics Extracurricular Activities - In an effort to slow the spread of the COVID-19 virus and keep schools open, the Montgomery County Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) has recommended Montgomery County Public Schools (MCPS) suspend all afterschool, non-athletic extracurricular activities from December 20, 2021 to January 7, 2022. Assemblies, performances, and club meetings may continue during the instructional day but should be limited to students and staff. All activities that occur after school may move to a virtual experience. Extracurricular activity staff should consider preparing for continued virtual experiences should DHHS extend the suspension timeline beyond January 7, 2022.
  • Sharing additional DAILY announcements over the PA system and during Advisory regarding the importance of adhering to best mitigation practices (mask wearing, sanitizing, staying home when sick, and getting tested for COVID-19 as needed).
  • A second CHS vaccination clinic is planned for Saturday, January 8 from 10 am - 6 pm for any child 12 years and older that would include 1st, 2nd, or booster vaccine. The clinic will have a capacity of 200 vaccines. Registration Link will be sent at a later date in a separate message.

As noted in the MCPS message, schools will be providing at-home rapid test kits for all students and staff over the next two weeks. All families will be asked to administer the tests to their children and then report any positive test results. Staff members will receive KN-95 masks. And increased testing will occur at CHS. MCPS will continue to use the same quarantine guidelines announced in November until further guidance is provided from the Maryland Department of Health. Individuals who test positive will need to continue to isolate for 10 days from the onset of symptoms, or 10 days from the date of the positive test for asymptomatic cases. More information is forthcoming.

Course Registration Season is here! To provide students with information about Advanced Placement (AP) courses or Electives, there will be an AP and electives Fair this week on Tuesday and Wednesday. Students will access the fair via their Science or Social Studies classes. It's our goal to ensure ALL students have access to rigorous course work such as AP classes, in addition to the elective courses that are of personal interest to students and can provide a different perspective than their traditional core courses.

Counselors will be meeting with all students in grades 9-11 to complete their registration for the 2022-2023 school year starting on January 3rd. This will occur for student in one of their English classes this week. Our Course Bulletin and Registration Cards were already provided to our students. Please refer to the following information and resources that will help students make their course selections including step by step instructions on how to register through their Student Vue. You can also find this information in your English teacher's Canvas Classroom page and our Clarksburg HS website.
