Winter Sports Registration Opens 10/18

MCPS and Magruder High School are excited to announce that registration for Winter Sports will open on October 18th! Below is information regarding the upcoming Winter Sports season, as well as the registration process. Additional information can be found on the MCPS Athletics website. (Note – tryouts for Winter sports will start on November 15th)

Registration Information

How to Register
Students must be registered by a parent through the MCPS ParentVue Portal. More information regarding the registration process can be found in this letter from MCPS (también disponible en español). Students must be registered by November 14th in order to guarantee that their registration will be processed in time for the first day of tryouts.

Steps for Registering via ParentVue (DIRECTIONS AVAILABLE HERE).

1.     Login to MCPS ParentVue Portal

2.     Locate “Online Registration” in the upper right hand corner of the screen.

3.     You should then see prompts to enter information for the “2021-2022 HS Athletics Registration – Winter”.
If you see something for “Annual Verification” or “Resume Annual Registration”, please click the “Start Over” button, logout and log back in, this should then allow you to access the Athletic Registration.

4.     The Athletics Registration screens will have you verify information in the system and then allow you to review and complete the Athletics Registration forms.
If any of the information appearing on the “Family” or “Parent/Guardian” information screens is incorrect, please contact the Magruder Registrar, Donte_D_Gassaway-Fields@mcpsmd.org to have this corrected before completing your registration.

ParentVue Troubleshooting Information
If a parent is having trouble logging into the MCPS ParentVue Portal:
(MCPS also has a guide to ParentVue for parents here).

·         If you have never activated your parent account:
Parents were sent activation information at the beginning of the school year, which included an Activation Key. If you still have this information, use it to activate your parent account. If you do not have the activation information, email Magruder Media Specialist, Stephanie_B_Schwinn@mcpsmd.org. Be sure to include the student's name, ID and parent name in the email.

·         Forgot your password? Click on the Forgot Password link on the ParentVue Portal.

·         Forgot the email address you used to activate your account? Email email Magruder Media Specialist, Stephanie_B_Schwinn@mcpsmd.org. Be sure to include the student's name, ID and parent name in the email.

Pre-Participation Physicals
Students should complete their pre-participation physical (MCPS Form SR-8) so that the medical eligibility form (last two pages of SR-8) is ready for online submission or for submission to the coach prior to tryouts/practices. Physicals are valid for one calendar year. A partial list of Clinics that offer Sports Physicals within the Montgomery County area is available online. Physicals can be uploaded by the parent during the registration process. However, if a parent needs to submit a physical after the student has already been registered, email an electronic copy of the completed pre-participation physical (MCPS Form SR-8) to Magruder Athletic Specialist,

Vaccination Requirement (New for Winter 2021-2022)
Vaccinations are one of the most effective strategies to protect each individual student-athlete and team, along with making sure the games go on. Beginning Monday, Nov. 15, the start of the winter sports season, all high school and eligible middle school student-athletes will be required to submit proof of full COVID-19 vaccination prior to participation. This requirement applies to the winter and spring sports seasons, as well as all out-of-season activities conducted through MCPS Athletics. This requirement is supported by the COVID-19 Task Force for MCPS Athletics, which includes representation from the Montgomery County Department of Health and Human Services and the Office of Emergency Management and Homeland Security, along with multiple MCPS departments. This requirement also aligns with recommendations from the American Academy of Pediatrics and the American Medical Society for Sports Medicine.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the timeline for the start of sports?
Registration will open on October 18th. Tryouts/practices will begin on November 15th for most sports. Tryouts and preseason will continue for three weeks, with the first contests beginning on December 7th.

If a student participated in Fall Sports or optional conditioning during the Fall season, does the student have to register for the Winter season?
Yes! Registration or participation in one season or for optional offseason workouts does not mean the student is registered for the upcoming Winter season. Any student who would like to participate in this upcoming Winter sports season must be registered by a parent using ParentVUE as outlined above.

If a student registered or participated in athletics in the 2020-2021 school year, will the student need to register again for Winter 2021-2022?
Yes! The registration is only for one sports season. Any student who would like to participate in this upcoming Winter sports season must register using ParentVUE as outlined above.

When should a parent register a student?
Registration opens on October 18th. It is recommended that students register at least 24 hours prior to the first day of tryouts/practices in order for the registration to be processed.

Can we register even if we do not have our physical form completed yet?
Yes – parents may register students prior to having an up to date physical completed. However, once the registration is submitted, the parent may not access the registration to upload the physical form. The physical form will then need to be submitted directly to Magruder Athletic Specialist, Silas Cheung.

My student can’t get an appointment to get a physical until after the start of tryouts. Is that ok?

Unfortunately, we cannot allow a student to tryout or participate in athletics until an up to date pre-participation physical (MCPS Form SR-8) has been submitted to the school. If getting an appointment with your physician is a challenge, there are other options – a partial list of Clinics that offer Sports Physicals within the Montgomery County area is available online.

Can we register before the student is vaccinated?
No. Students must be fully vaccinated or submit proof of a medical exemption in order to complete the registration process.

What if my student does not want to get vaccinated or is not vaccinated in time for tryouts?
MCPS is requiring all students who would like to participate in athletics to be fully vaccinated prior to the start of tryouts. More information can be found on the MCPS Athletics website. Proof of vaccination/exemption will be submitted during the online registration process through ParentVUE.

What forms are acceptable for providing documentation of vaccination?
Vaccination cards, certificates, or approval from an authorized health care provider. Vaccination certificates can be downloaded and printed at this link. Individuals who received vaccinations at a Montgomery County DHHS Vaccination Clinic can request a copy by email at  c19vaccination@montgomerycountymd.gov, or otherwise contact the provider where the vaccination was administered. Official vaccination records from an authorized health care provider are valid.

Are there any exemptions to the vaccination requirement?
Yes. Students may be exempted from immunization requirements if an authorized health care provider certifies that there is a medical reason not to receive the COVID-19 vaccine. MCPS Form 560-30A: COVID-19 Vaccine Medical Exemption Request for Student-Athletes must be completed by a licensed health care professional and submitted during the registration process for athletics. Forms may be uploaded electronically during the online registration process or, for those utilizing paper forms, a hard copy may be submitted to Magruder Athletic Specialist, Silas Cheung.

Can student-athletes apply for a religious exemption to the vaccination requirement?

No. MCPS is not accepting religious exemptions to the vaccination requirement. More information can be found on the MCPS Athletics website.

What defines “fully vaccinated” and can a student tryout before being fully vaccinated
The CDC defines fully vaccinated as:

·         Two weeks after a second dose in a 2-dose series, such as the Pfizer or Moderna vaccines, OR

·         Two weeks after a single-dose vaccine, such as the Johnson & Johnson’s Janssen vaccine.

Student-athletes must be fully vaccinated by Monday, November 15, 2021, for winter sports and all other activities that begin as of this date (fall student-athletes are exempt). This means all winter student-athletes must have received their second shot (or first Johnson & Johnson) no later than Monday, November 1, 2021.

Will there be tryouts, or are all students who register going to be on a roster?
This will depend on the sport and the number of student registrations. Tryout/practice information will be posted and communicated to students and parents, including whether there will be a tryout period to start the season. Similarly, information about where to report for tryouts and what the student needs to bring to tryouts will be communicated to parents and students at that time.

Can a student tryout for more than one sport in the same season?
Parents must declare only one sport per season during the registration process. However, if a student would like to change his/her sport prior to the start of tryouts, the parent must email Magruder Athletic Specialist, silas_p_cheung@mcpsmd.org in advance of tryouts. Similarly, if a student tries out for a sport and does not make the team (or decides to change sports after the tryout date), please have the parent email Magruder Athletic Specialist, silas_p_cheung@mcpsmd.org

Will transportation be provided for tryouts and practices?
Unfortunately, transportation is not provided to and from tryouts and practices. Students are responsible for arranging their own transportation for tryouts and practices. Additionally, students may not remain on campus for extended periods of time before or after tryouts and practices due to supervision policies.

Can a student register after the start of tryouts?
The registration portal will remain open online after the start of tryouts. However, for sports that make cuts, there may not be an opportunity to participate once tryouts have been held at the start of the season. If your student would like to register after November 15th, it is recommended to reach out to the coach of the sport to see if there is still an opportunity to participate (see below for contact information).

How can I contact a coach if I have a question?
