Which instruments can a beginner play?
Beginners may choose violin, viola, cello, flute, clarinet, saxophone trumpet/cornet, french horn, trombone, or baritone. Percussion are only offered to students with two years experience on another musical instrument.

Why should I consider a more unusual instrument?
A good band or orchestra needs players on all instruments, especially the slightly more unusual instruments like trombone, viola or cello. Please read Mr. Herman's article “Which Instrument Should I Choose?” You can find the link on this website.

How often are the music classes?
All beginning classes are 30 minutes, once a week. All advanced classes are 45 minute once a week. All instrumental music classes are pull out classes. Schedules are made to accommodate the most number of students with as few class room disruptions as possible.

What happens on ½ days or 2 hour delays?
Please bring your instrument , even if your music day has a ½ day or two-hour delay. Mr. Vaughn will try to adjust the schedule so that he can see everyone.

How much do I need to practice?
A good minimum goal is to practice 20 minutes at least 5 times per week. Students with private teachers will practice much more than that.

How do I find out when my class is this week?
The class schedule is available 2 places: First, it is posted in all the 4th and 5th grade classrooms and outside Mr. Vaughn’s teaching space. Secondly, it is listed on this website—look under the section for your school.

When are the concerts this year?
Advanced students ONLY will play in the Winter Recital. Beginners and advanced students will play in the Spring Concert. Look under the section for your school to find the concert dates.

What do we wear for concerts?
Concert dress is white on top, black on the bottom. Please make an effort to look nice—you are performing!

How do I find out about private teachers on my instrument?
Contact Mr. Vaughn if you are interested in finding a private teacher. He will suggest the names of some teachers for your instrument.

Are there music groups outside of school I can participate in?
There are many musical organizations in this area, including 3 youth orchestras. These orchestras are Maryland Classics Youth Orchestra, Potomac Valley Youth Orchestra, and Rockville Regional Youth Orchestra. You can find their websites on the “Links” page.

Where can I get my instrument repaired or buy music supplies?
There are many music stores in this area—please check the phone book under “Musical Instruments.” Ones that are frequented by students include Chuck Levin’s Washington Music Center, Dale Music, L&L Wind shop, Lashof Violins, Music and Arts, Potters Violins, and Victor Litz.

What do I do if my mouthpiece (on a brass instrument) gets stuck?
BRING IT TO SCHOOL FOR MR. VAUGHN TO FIX! Do not let mom or dad pull out their tool box and attack the instrument—this is how brass instruments get damaged. Mr. Vaughn has the appropriate tool for quickly and easily fixing this problem!
