Spelling Patterns

In second grade, spelling focuses on both high frequency words and spelling patterns. We will spend two weeks studying a particular spelling pattern.

High Frequency Words

High Frequency Words are words that appear often in second grade. They are words that we practice in addition to our regular spelling words in class. By the end of 2nd grade, these are words all students should be able to spell. Please help your child practice these at home.

2nd Grade Spelling Strategies

The second grade spelling/word study program is based primarily on spelling patterns and high frequency words. Students will study words with an assigned spelling pattern for a two-week period. Teachers will assign a variety of spelling and vocabulary development activities for class work and homework during each two week period for the purpose of helping students learn both the spellings and the meanings of the words. There will be a spelling test at the end of each biweekly period.

Introduction of the Spelling Patterns: In class, students are given the spelling patterns. Students brainstorm lists of possible words that are a part of this focus pattern and find words around the room. Pattern words are "core words." The core words are selected by the teacher for the entire class. These words are differentiated for meeting the needs of all students. The student will add 2 personal words from their own writing or simply words of interest. The following are examples of activities that teachers may use in class or at home to enrich our spelling program.
Look, Say, Cover, Write, Check: A practice paper for learning to spell the words.
Word Search: Students go around the room searching for words with that spelling pattern.
Buddy Check: Students pair with an assigned buddy for tests. Students check each other's papers, identify incorrect spelling, and develop strategies to spell the word correctly the next time.
Spelling Test: Spelling tests will be given every other Friday. Teachers will give the 8 focus words. Students are expected to memorize their two personal words and write them during the test.
