Message from the Principal

 

Thanks to all who attended this week’s PTSA meeting and coffee.  We presented our preliminary reopening plans and you asked great questions and provided important feedback regarding Wootton’s reopening plans.  Please know that more communication is forthcoming as we move forward with reopening school.  Please stay tuned next week when you will receive confirmation of your choice for your student(s) to remain virtual or return to in-person instruction.  This communication will be sent to ALL families and will occur after the February 23rd Board of Education meeting.  Finally, a special thank you to the PTSA for hosting this week’s events.  The webinar recording can be found on Wootton’s website under the PTSA tab.

 

We are very excited to invite our entire community to this year’s Black History Month Program.  Our annual Black History Month Program will occur this Tuesday, February 23rd at 7:00 pm.  This year’s program will be hosted virtually, and all information can be found on the attached flyer and on our website.  All are welcome to attend!

Choose Respect 2021

Montgomery County Public Schools (MCPS) and the Office of Teaching, Learning, and Schools (OTLS) is working collaboratively with Montgomery County, the Montgomery County Family Justice Center Foundation, and the Jewish Coalition Against Domestic Abuse, along with several local business partners, to host the Choose Respect Montgomery 2021 Public Service Announcement (PSA) video contest and student/community event. A PSA video contest is an opportunity for students to share their ideas by creating a 60-second video about dating violence. Students will earn 10 SSL hours for their successful completion and quality submission of a PSA video. The top five videos, selected by students in secondary schools, will be awarded with prizes and viewed on the MCPS and Choose Respect Montgomery webpages. The deadline for submission on videos is Monday, March 1stMore details can be found here.

 

Maryland Seal of Biliteracy

Seniors who are proficient in a language other than English will be able to take a test soon that could lead to their being awarded the Maryland Seal of Biliteracy.  (This is a prestigious add-on to the graduation diploma which attests to the student's high proficiency in at least one language in addition to English.)  The tests will be available in numerous languages.  Students who think they would be eligible are requested to complete this google survey seal of biliteracy by February 26 at the latest.   Additional information about the award can be found at mcps seal info.  The seal can also be earned by the achievement of a 4 or 5 on an AP language test.  Please note the following: 

For the 2020-2021 Implementation: 

  • MCPS will remotely administer the assessments to seniors only.
  • Tentative testing window: March 2021 through April 2021.
  • Students will only have one opportunity to test, there will be no retakes.
  • Testing will occur during school hours, in a 3-hour session.
  • Testing fee: $27. MCPS will continue to cover the cost of the assessment for students who wish to assess in their native/heritage language and are not scheduled to take an AP language exam. More information to follow.

Wootton Patriot Players

The Wootton Patriot Players are proud to present their winter show Lead Rings On The Merry-Go-Round. This FREE virtual show will be streamed on March 5th at 7:00pm. You can request “tickets” and learn more at www.woottonarts.com

 

Attention:  9th Grade Students Who Attended Frost MS Last Year: 

Curbside pick-up of Locker Materials for 9th grade students who attended Frost MS, last year will be held Tuesday, February 23 and Wednesday February 24, from 9:00 am until 4:00 pm. (in front of the Frost MS cafeteria doors) This will be the last opportunity to obtain these items from last school year. 

  • Please continue to practice social distancing and wear a mask during the curb-side pick-up. The school building is still closed to the public. 
  • Show in the passenger side window, Student’s FIRST NAME, LAST NAME, GRADE LEVEL, and a detailed description (color, style, etc.) of the locker items. 
  • Roll down the back, passenger side window or open sliding door or open the trunk 
  • Please Do Not get out of your car 
  • Staff will place the materials in your car - Thank you for your cooperation. 

Locker items that are NOT picked up on these two dates will be donated to charity. 

 

Fall Athletic Registration is Now Open

MCPS and Wootton High School are excited to announce that registration for Fall Sports is now open! Students must be registered by a parent through the MCPS ParentVUE Portal. Registration will close on February 22. The Fall “season” will begin on February 27th and go through April 17th.   Information regarding the registration process can be found on the Wootton Web page under the athletics tab or you can go to Woottonsports.com

Bulk Meal Boxes Available for MCPS Families (English and Spanish)

The Division of Food and Nutrition Services is providing bulk box meals to help accommodate the schedules of working parents and meet the needs of MCPS students. DFNS will distribute boxes on Tuesdays (3 Day Meal Box) & Fridays (4 Day Meal Box) at two designated locations. More information can be found here.

 

Cajas de Comida Disponibles

Student Transfer Application Season Underway (English and Spanish)

Montgomery County parents/guardians who wish to request a Change of School Assignment (COSA) for their children from their home school may begin the process during the transfer season that began on Feb. 1. All COSA requests must be submitted no later than April 1, 2021. More information is available here.

Elementary Immersion Application Process Now Open For The 2021-2022 School Year (English and Spanish)

The elementary application process for the 2021-2022 school year will remain open until April 23, 2021. Any student entering grades K–5 in the 2021-2022 school year may participate in the immersion application process. More information is available here.

El proceso de solicitud de escuela elemental para el año escolar 2021-2022 permanecerá abierto hasta el 23 de abril de 2021. MCPS Planning to Offer Systemwide Summer Programs (English and Spanish)

Please note: Wootton High School will be offering summer enrichment opportunities through the Wootton Summer Institute. Information will be forthcoming.

MCPS is planning a variety of summer  programs for elementary, middle and high school students. Programs will be focused on helping students accelerate learning following this unprecedented school year, with a focus on mathematics, literacy and preparing for the next grade level. Changes to Administration of Advanced Placement and International Baccalaureate Exams (English and Spanish)

On Feb. 4, the College Board and International Baccalaureate (IB) announced changes to spring 2021 Advanced Placement (AP) and IB exams. MCPS will review the available options, gather feedback from stakeholders and develop a districtwide plan for AP and IB test administration in spring 2021. More information is available here.

TutorMe Free Service Is Now Available (English and Spanish)

TutorMe.com, a new, free student online tutoring and homework help service, is now available in any subject for students in grades 3-12. TutorMe.com is a secure, online resource easily accessible through MCPS student Canvas and StudentVUE accounts and offers on-demand assistance. More information is available here.

Anti-Vaping Symposium Set for February 27 (English and Spanish)

MCPS is hosting a virtual anti-vaping symposium from 11:30 a.m.–1 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 27. The event, which is open to staff, students, parents, health providers and community members, will provide information on the health risks of vaping, preventative measures and community resources that schools and families may access.
