SSL UPDATES (COVID-19)
Submitting SSL forms during closure:
All SSL forms can still be turned in electronically. Please submit your completed, signed SSL form, to Ms. Reed by email: Jamie_L_Reed@mcpsmd.org. If you have any trouble or do not have the capabilities to scan documents, please contact Ms. Reed and she will work with you on submission alternatives.
Volunteer opportunities during closure:
We are encouraging everyone to stay home, stay safe, and abide by the governor's orders through COVID-19. There are some virtual opportunities available and they keep them updated on this website - https://www.montgomerycountymd.gov/volunteercenter/
If you are exploring other virtual activities that are not listed on this site, please contact Ms. Reed for pre-approval. The county does have specific guidelines that we have to work under. Here is the link to the county's website for more information on those guidelines and other info - https://www.montgomeryschoolsmd.org/departments/ssl/
If you have any questions at all, please email Ms. Reed at Jamie_L_Reed@mcpsmd.org.
Welcome back to school!! I hope everyone enjoyed their summers! This is a reminder that any student who earned SSL hours this summer needs to turn in the SSL Verification Form to me by the last Friday in September, which is September 28th. My office is located in the counseling office. Students can hand it off to me directly or leave it in a bin outside my door that is marked SSL Forms.
If you still have questions about Student Service Learning after reviewing the information on these pages, talk to your counselor, or contact Ms. Reed, by e-mail, or in person, in the Counseling Office.
UPCOMING SSL OPPORTUNITIES:
-SportsPlus, a MCPS approved organization for SSL, need volunteers for their spring and summer programs. This great organization serves children and teens on the mild to moderate autism spectrum with sports and socializing opportunities. Please visit our website for more information at www.playsportsplus.org or click on link for info on their specific spring and summer programs.
-Women’s Thrift Shop near the Bethesda Farmer’s market needs volunteers on Saturdays from 9:30 to 1 and 1 to 4 & Sundays from 12 – 4. If interested, students should email Judy Carver at: firstname.lastname@example.org
-Learn effective strategies for working with older adults and plan interactive programs based on older adults' interests and yours. Students will learn basic principles of aging and best practices for encouraging social and cognitive stimulation with older adult residents in assisted living and implement programs Sunday afternoons at Charles E. Smith Life Community in Rockville. Examples of programs include music and memory, teaching technology skills (show off your Smartphone and App skills), art, and dance.
-VisArts Volunteer Opportunity - Details Here - Volunteer Coordinator: Rachel Martin
-SIT WITH US – You can earn 1 SSL hour for hosting an open lunch at WJ. You can download the APP-SIT WITH US (Iphone only) to schedule an open lunch that you will host, OR see Ms. Tucker, AP if you do not have the app. SIT WITH US is a concept that no student should have to eat lunch alone. By hosting an open lunch, you are demonstrating that “all students are included” at WJ. You may host lunches as often or seldom as you choose.
