COURSE SELECTION, SCHEDULE CHANGES & CHANGE POLICY

COURSE SELECTION

Students must select 7 courses per semester, ensuring that all graduation requirements are completed during their four years in high school. MCPS has an excellent online tool to assist students and parents with the four-year planning process. "Your Planning Worksheet", available here, allows input of course selections into a worksheet that is saved throughout the student's high school career. This printable worksheet provides a year-by-year snapshot of courses selected and which graduation requirements they fulfill. All students also have access to their Course Planner on Naviance Student.  Students can access this tool for planning as well.  Once all course selections have been determined, they must be recorded on the appropriate schedule card, and entered on the MyMCPS Scheduler site by the due date. Schedule cards and MyMCPS Scheduler instructions and login screen are accessed from the "Table of Contents" on the left side of this page. Entering course selections in the MCPS planning tool does NOT register students for the courses. Students who do not wish to use the online planning tool may print a four-year planning worksheet.  Another tool students should complete is the WJ Course Selection and Planning Sheet as part of their planning and selection process.  The link is available here

SCHEDULE CHANGE and COURSE SELECTION CHANGE POLICY

The courses offered at WJ and the number of course sections are based on initial student registration. Courses chosen determine staffing, number of texts required, and other factors vital to the functioning of Walter Johnson High School. Once the courses and the number of sections are determined, changes in course selections are limited by space availability. Students and parents should consider their course selections, including honors level decisions, carefully before registering. Course selection lists will be sent home to all students in mid-May. WJ students who wish to change their initial course selections should contact their counselors. Eighth grade students who wish to change their initial course selections should contact their counselors at Tilden or North Bethesda. All registrations must be finalized by June 12.

SCHEDULE CHANGE REQUESTS AFTER JUNE 12 will be CONSIDERED ONLY for the FOLLOWING REASONS:

  • Missing a class period.
  • Failure to meet a class prerequisite.
  • Summer school course work completed or failed.
  • Incorrect placement. (True error; change of mind is not an acceptable reason)
  • Teacher recommendation for class level change.
  • Authenticated health reason.
