Department Overview
If you talk to a man in a language he understands, that goes to his head. If you talk to him in his language, that goes to his heart. Nelson Mandela
The goal of the World Languages Department here at Wheaton High School is to unlock the doors that keep people linguistically, culturally and socially separated! We want our students to be able to function in a diverse, global society. We want our students to be able to appreciate the beauty and richness of other cultures and strive toward proficiency in other languages. In our World Languages Department, we help students:
- COMMUNICATE and PRESENT in a language other than English;
- INTERPRET a variety of written and audio-visual texts in the target language
- Gain Knowledge and understanding of other CULTURES;
- Make CONNECTIONS with other disciplines;
- Develop insight into and be able to COMPARE the nature of language and culture; and finally
- Participate in multilingual COMMUNITIES at home and around the world.
