A Rigorous Math Science Pathway

Engineering

These programs are open to applicants that reside in the Down County Consortium (DCC) or currently attends a DCC Middle School. Students must have taken Algebra 1 before or during 8th grade to qualify to apply.

Admission to the Biomedical and Engineering Application-only Program is competitive and open to current Grade 8 students who live and/or attend middle school in the Downcounty Consortium (Argyle, Eastern, Lee, Loiederman, Newport Mill, Parkland, Silver Spring International, Sligo, Takoma Park). Highly motivated gifted and talented students are encouraged to apply. Multiple criteria are used to evaluate candidates, including teacher recommendations, written statements from candidates, previous grades and coursework, test scores, and achievements. Notification of selection decisions should occur by mail to each parent/student by January of this school year.

What is PLTW?


Biomedical Application Program

 
The Biomedical Application-Only Program provides a cohort of highly motivated students with a rigorous math, science, and medicine sequence of courses. Through a hands-on and collaborative approach, students will explore prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of disease in order to design innovative solutions for 21st century health challenges. Through the use of data acquisition software, students will monitor body functions such as muscle movement, reflex, voluntary action, and respiration.

 

Students will have the opportunity to…

  • Be mentored by medical school students, professors from University of Maryland, and other medical professionals specific to a student’s area of interest.
  • Participate in an internship at the National Institutes of Health, The George Washington University or another local science facility.
  • Earn college credit and be taught by college professors.
  • Compete in scientific competitions at the local, state, and national level.

 

Biomedical Course Descriptions

1 World Language: French Italian, Spanish, or Chinese (choose one language).

2 Elective Coursework: Fine Arts/ Music (choose as needed).

3 Technology Coursework: Introduction to Engineering Design or Foundations of Technology

4 Single period AP Science allows for an additional elective course to be taken.

Summer Enrichment or Internship Suggested in the summer between Grade 11 and 12. Students find their own internship.

Engineering Application Program

The Engineering Application-Only Program provides a cohort of highly motivated students with a rigorous math, science, and engineering sequence of courses. Students will experience hands-on and project based activities that promote the development of critical thinking skills. Students will become familiar with and explore multiple fields of engineering including aerospace, mechanical, civil, and electrical. Through the use of the engineering design process, students will create their own inventions or innovations to solve real world problems.

Students will have the opportunity to…

  • Participate in a variety of clubs including FIRST robotics, Civil Air Patrol, and A.C.E. Mentors.
  • Use 3D design software used by companies such as Lockheed Martin and Intel.
  • Earn college credit and be taught by college professors.
  • Compete in competitions at the local, state, and national level.
