The Middle Years Programme (MYP) is one of four programs developed by the International Baccalaureate Organization. It is a five-year program designed for students in grades 6-10. The Middle Years Programme shares common educational principles with the IB Primary Years Program and the IB Diploma Program, including an aim to develop internationally-minded people who, recognizing their common humanity and shared guardianship of the planet, to help to create a better and more peaceful world.

The Middle Years Programme at WMHS

At Watkins Mill High School, all students enrolled in 9th and 10th grade are automatically a part of the MYP: there is no application required! As participants in the program, our students take classes that are created with the International Baccalaureate Diploma Program framework in mind, which provides a focus on interdisciplinary learning, rigorous academic standards, and connections with the international community. As a result, students that choose to join our school’s IB Diploma Programme or IB Career-related Programme for their 11th and 12th-grade years will find that they have been adequately prepared for the challenge and the expectations of those classes.

The MYP Framework

Approaches to learning (ATL) – students are shown how to develop their abilities in thinking, research, self-management, communication, and social skills to help them excel in the classroom and in their community.

Key and related concepts – Learning is organized according to relevant academic concepts and real-world applications.

Global contexts – All academic work has a demonstrated relationship with the global community and the diverse cultural fabric that makes up our world.

Personal Project – In 10th-grade, all students conduct an independent study of their choice and create a project that shows off their knowledge and their passions.

Service as Action through Community Service – helping our communities brings students in contact with their community

These core components are integrated in all eight subjects of the program.

MYP Curriculum by Subject

The program consists of eight subject groups integrated through six global contexts that provide a framework for learning within and across the subjects. Each course in the MYP is organized according to eight subject groups: Arts, Design, Individuals and Societies, Language Acquisition, Language and Literature, Mathematics, Physical and Health Education, and Sciences. Each of these subject groups has an overview that gives an overall picture of learning and the connections between each course.
