Hello Harriet Tubman families! My name is Tyosho Curtis and I am delighted to serve as the School Counselor. I will be working with our students, families, staff and community partners to improve outcomes and ensure success for ALL of our students by implementing a comprehensive guidance program. Through education, prevention and intervention activities, I will support students in the areas of academic achievement, career development and social emotional skills.
Classroom Guidance Lessons
Classroom guidance is an essential part of a comprehensive guidance program. Regular lessons provided by the School Counselor are designed to teach and empower students with knowledge and skills to keep them engaged in their learning, to become problem solvers, get along with others and manage their feelings. Lessons occur throughout the school year.
Small Group Counseling
Small counseling groups allow for more targeted intervention for students that need an enhanced level of support. Topics can include: anxiety, changing families, self-esteem, social skills and loss/grief. Small groups are offered as determined by the needs of students.
One-on-one short-term counseling will be available to all students to address specific social, emotional, behavioral or personal needs that may impact a student’s performance or ability to be successful in school.
Zones of Regulation
The Zones of Regulation framework provides all Tubman staff and students a common language that emphasizes understanding and being aware of our feelings and their impact on our energy, mood and behavior. Recognizing our feelings and zones can help us safely and positively use tools to manage our zones so that we meet our shared goals of learning and getting along with others.
Restorative Justice/Restorative Practices
“Restorative justice is about building, maintaining and repairing relationships to form healthy, supportive, reflective and inclusive communities” (PPS RJ Implementation Program). Tubman staff will implement restorative practices to create a just and equitable learning environment for our students that prioritizes positive relationships that help them thrive.
Be Well 365: Be Healthy, Be Kind, Be You
Be Well 365 ensures that students have the necessary skills to become positive members of their school and greater community, manage their emotions, build academic and social resilience, identify and access support when needed for themselves and others, resolve conflicts peacefully and make positive and safe choices. Tubman staff and students will engage and implement wellness practices to achieve the goals outlined by MCPS.
