Virtual STEM Expo 2021

Dear Families of Travilah ES,

We are pleased to announce that our Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math Expo at Travilah Elementary School will still be held this year, but in a virtual setting. Similar to the STEM Expo held last year, this is an enriching opportunity to explore the areas of science, technology, engineering, and math, as well as how those areas are interrelated. This is a non-competitive event where students are encouraged to explore topics that are interesting to them and share their findings from their investigations.

STEM Expo sign-up

This is an enrichment activity where all steps of the Engineering Design Process are to be completed at home. Attached on the following pages of this packet is a page titled, “STEM Expo Tips and Links” with more information.

Student projects will be displayed in a google slide format to be shared with all staff and students at Travilah Elementary School. To take the place of an in-person event, and to provide students with recognition and an opportunity to share their project with others, there will be a Zoom event. If students would like to present their project during the Zoom event, they will be assigned a time. During their assigned time, students will be joined on Zoom by some staff members, as well as a few other members of the community, and be given the opportunity to present their project. A schedule will be sent out when project sign-ups are closed, but the live Zoom events will take place during the week of February 22-26, 2021.

In addition to the student projects, there will also be some STEM related pre-recorded activities for families to watch and complete. It will be a wonderful time for students of all ages to participate virtually in some STEM activities that they can do from the comfort of their own home! These will be shared with all Travilah families, along with student projects, in a google slides presentation.

All students in grades K-5 are encouraged to participate, though it is not mandatory for students in any grade level. This is a perfect opportunity to make this a family project. For example, having fourth grade and kindergarten siblings working together on one STEM project. Working in a group helps the collaborative process and is an important part of the STEM pedagogy.

What you need to do to participate:

  • Come up with a list of STEM related projects that you might be interested in completing
  • Choose one of your ideas for your project
  • With an adult’s help, complete the google form no later than Friday, February 12, 2021 if you would like to participate. (One form submitted per group, NOT per student please)
