World Studies Curriculum
The MCPS Social Studies Curriculum implemented at our school is a comprehensive study of our community, nation, and world, offering students the skills and knowledge to thrive in an increasingly complex society. Students at the middle school level take a three year sequence of social studies courses. At the conclusion of this succession of courses, students can be expected to have acquired a beneficial base of knowledge that has covered the five major cultural areas of the world. These areas are comprised of Africa, Asia, Europe, Latin America, and North America.
6th Grade - Historical Inquiry World Studies 6/Historical Inquiry Global Humanities
Students in sixth grade trace the development of human civilization. The year begins with the civilizations of Mesopotamia and Egypt. There is then an examination of Ancient Greece and Rome. Next is a unit on China. Finally the year ends with a study of the different major religions of the world.
7th Grade - Advanced World Studies 7
Seventh grade students trace the development of civilizations in Europe, Africa and the Americas. Students begin their study of Europe with an exploration of political systems of the Middle Ages. Students then study the trade kingdoms of Africa. Next is an examination of the cultures of the Pre-Columbian America. The year ends with the Renaissance and the Age of exploration
8th Grade - Advanced US History 8
The eighth grade curriculum places special emphasis on the preparation of students for their entry into the high school social studies program. The course follows United States history from the Revolutionary war through the Reconstruction after the Civil War.
