TPMS Magnet Program

April 23 2023 Update

Hello Magnet Families!  Yikes! It has been almost a month since I posted an update.  I'll try to keep up on these, but things have been busy since Spring Break.  Our students have been busy this past month.  Ms Davis' FACS team won "Best in Show" in the "Real Foods for Real Kids" contest in Virginia, the 7th graders went on the Finance Park Trip, we had two open houses for new Magnet families, and the PTSA held a very successful Flea Market.  Of course, there was plenty of learning too, and you can see a picture of a 7th grader dissecting a chicken wing to learn about muscles and tendons.  This week, we have our production of Newsies, and you should definitely come and buy a ticket.  We are also beginning to plan our "WE SHINE" event in June, and, of course, state testing begins in May.  Check it all out in the table below!

Spring After-School Drawing and Watercolor Classes

At the Takoma Park Community Center on Maple Ave from 3:30 - 5:30 PM, begin on May 2, and May 4, 2023. These six week classes are held on Tuesdays (6 spaces available), and Thursdays (9 spaces),

Drawing and Watercolor is offered by Katie Dell Kaufman, who has run after-school art programming for middle school students in Takoma Park since 2008, and art related summer camps since 2010 (looking for summer camp? There are still 3 spaces in the Still Life Interior Camp July 10 - 14). Before that she taught in the Young People's Program at the Corcoran School of Art.

The class is $180 for Takoma Park Residents (and $200 for non residents). Classes are currently open for registration through the Takoma Park Rec Department's online registration system, ActiveNet here. For images and further info on the classes click here.  Questions? Feel free to contact Katie at kdkaufman@pobox.com.

MCPS Youth Climate Summit

  • Montgomery County Public Schools and students from across the District are hosting its annual Youth Climate Summit on Saturday, April 22, 2023, from 8:30 am to 3:35 pm at Tilden Middle School. Details about the event, including student and mentor interest forms, are available on the event website.

  • The goal is for middle and high school students to learn about climate change on a personal level through plenary speakers and workshops that demonstrate actionable ways to engage in the climate movement. The Summit concludes with participants being mentored through the process of writing a climate action plan, a project outline they can implement in their school or community.

  • Centralized transportation will be available, and lunch will be provided. Students will earn SSL hours for their participation. Transportation hubs will be finalized prior to the event based on enrollment.
