TPMS Magnet Program

March 19 2023 Update

Hello Magnet Families!  Our 3rd Marking Period is coming to an end which means the final stretch of the year is around the corner.  Please check your kids' grades and help them make up any missing work.  Last week was busy as we celebrated Pi Day, took the Md Survey, and had our weather disaster drill.  Over the weekend, our Math Team competed at Johns Hopkins--check the table below for details of their amazing accomplisments, and also see details about joining the rigor committee which will, among other things, help plan the TPMS WE SHINE event which is the evolution of the TPMS Steam night  (for those of you who remember that.)

WE SHINE

In years past, STEAM night was an incredible event where students presented their science projects while outside scientists and artists came to TPMS to showcase their research and talents.

This year, we are trying a new slant on that by having TAKOMA WE SHINE on Thursday, June 8th.  Like Steam night, students will be able to create and display original research projects, but so can afterschool groups, outside presenters, and other TPMS departments.

Our vision is to show how we can shine in everything from math, science, literature, language, even athletics.

We are looking for parents to join our Rigor committee to help plan this event, contact outside presenters, mentor students through original research, and look for ways to improve rigor in every class.

TPMS MATH TEAM

Over the weekend, top math students from around the state met at the Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore for the Maryland Mathcounts Competition.

Takoma was the only school that had all twelve of its chapter competitors qualify for state – congratulations to Jessica, Ethan, Mason, Chris, Mitchell, Sam, Gabe, Daniel, Yixuan, Bill, David, and Andy on their fabulous feat!

Takoma captured second place in the team competition, as well as the three top spots in Countdown Round – David in 3rd, Bill in 2nd, and Chris came in first in this high speed, head-to-head matchup event!

Finally, two Takoma students ranked among the top four individual competitors – David in 3rd and Bill in 2nd.  These two students won an all-expenses paid trip to Florida to represent our state at the National Mathcounts Competition in May.

Way to go, amazing Takoma mathletes!
