January 1 2023 Update

Happy New Year Magnet Families. We hope everyone enjoyed time with family and friends and are ready to come back to TPMS to finish the semester and the year.  This week we congratulate three TPMS students who were named among the top 300 scientists.  We also want to let you know about an exciting screenwriting and filmmaking opportunity on January 5th.  It is normally $125 dollars but three TPMS students able to take the class for free.  See details below:

Five MCPS middle school students were named to a list of 300 top scientists in a competition by the Broadcom Foundation and the Society for Science. Three are from TPMS.

 

They are:

• Sophie Huang, Takoma Park Middle School

January 3:  School Resumes!

January 12/13:  6th Grade MAP Math tests

January 19th: Scenes Night

8th graders perform!

January 23 to 27: 6th Grade MAP Reading tests

January 30 to Feb 3: 7th and 8th Grade MAP make-up tests

All 6th graders are required to take the MAP reading and Math tests to assess their transition to middle school. In the last week of January, students who scored below proficiency in the Fall MAP tests will be tested again to support their progress.

Feburary 3rd: Medieval Times trip

All 7th graders will spend the day learning about life in the dark ages on a field trip to Medieval times. Click HERE for the permission slip.

 

 

 

Youth Media Screenwriting Class

 

MCM is hosting an Introduction to Filmmaking and Scriptwriting class on January 5, 2023. This event will be held at our downtown Silver Spring Media Lab from 6 – 8pm. This two hour course will feature two local award winning filmmakers not only teaching participants about filmmaking and scriptwriting basics, but will also share about their experiences in the industry and answer audience questions.

 

MCPS students may participate in this course for free. Please use promo code student23 on Eventbrite. Parents, guardians and family members wishing to take this class with their student may receive a 25% discount using promo code family23

 

Students interested in filmmaking, video production or media can sign up to assist in helping our production assistants set up for the class. Students will learn about lighting and camera equipment in the process. Students will earn 4 SSL hours if they choose to volunteer. Students volunteering do not have to register, but this form must still be filled out and signed.
