One of the exciting experiences your student will have as a Grade 7 student next school year is participating in a new financial literacy program through his/her social studies class. For the first time, all Montgomery County Public Schools (MCPS) Grade 7 students will participate in the Finance Park financial literacy curriculum and culminating field trip. Finance Park is a program of Junior Achievement, an international leader in financial literacy education. Grade 7 students will be attending Finance Park on January 16, 17 or 18. A different group of Grade 7 students will attend Finance Park each day until each of them has had an opportunity to participate in this exciting program!
As part of the Finance Park curriculum, students will learn about saving and investing, types of credit, creating a budget, wages and taxes, and the role of insurance. Students will also complete a career interest inventory and learn about programs of study available at their local high school as well as at the Thomas Edison High School of Technology.
The success of the Finance Park program, however, is dependent on the active participation of parent and community volunteers. During the simulation, students are in small groups that are guided through the budget decision-making process. If you have ever paid a bill or used a credit card, you have what it takes to be a Finance Park volunteer! I hope you will consider being a Finance Park volunteer on one of the days our students will be engaged in the budget simulation.
