What is the International Baccalaureate?
Founded in 1968, the International Baccalaureate® (IB) is a non-profit educational foundation offering four highly respected programs of international education that develop the intellectual, personal, emotional and social skills needed to live, learn and work in a rapidly globalizing world. Schools must be authorized, by the IB organization, to offer any of the programs.
The IB has a hard-earned reputation for high standards of teaching, pedagogical leadership and student achievement. They work with schools, governments and international organizations to develop challenging programs of international education and rigorous assessment.
For information about the IB’s achievements, initiatives and future strategy, read their annual review which can be found on their website - IBO.org.
Springbrook High School offers both the Middle Years Programme and the Diploma Programme of the International Baccalaureate Organization (IBO) based in Cardiff, Wales.
The International Baccalaureate Middle Years Programme (IB MYP) is a flexible instructional framework that encourages students to become critical thinkers, life-long learners and responsible global citizens. Three fundamental concepts are infused into all aspects of instruction: culture, holistic learning, and communication. The instructional framework uses MCPS curricula for all grade nine and ten courses. All ninth and tenth grade students at Springbrook are part of the IB MYP.
Students who know they are interested in pursuing the IB Diploma in grades 11 and 12 should consider joining the IB DP cohort. The purpose of the ninth and tenth grade cohorts is to create a community formed around a common learning endeavor, where like-minded students support one another in their academic and cognitive development and emotional well-being as they prepare for participation in the IB Diploma Programme.
The International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme (IB DP) is unique in that it provides a liberal arts, interdisciplinary education leading to a diploma or subject certificates. Teachers plan and provide interdisciplinary instruction and assessments focusing on common topics, themes and materials within subject areas. The curricula taught in all IB DP subjects is developed by IB educators world-wide, providing a comprehensive and in-depth experience with international perspectives. Students are provided with multiple and varied opportunities to show their understanding of the curricula throughout the program. The IB DP is a fee based program.
The IB curriculum is currently offered in 125 different countries at the primary, middle, and secondary levels. The IB diploma is recognized and held in high regard by over a thousand universities worldwide.
