Welcome to Sherwood Elementary School! The dedicated staff, energetic students and enthusiastic parent community make Sherwood a truly special place!
Allow me to introduce myself! I grew up in Maryland and went to Montgomery County schools until 6th grade when my family moved to Cairo, Egypt. I lived in Cairo until I graduated High School and returned to the United States for college where I attended George Washington University.
I began my teaching career in Prince George’s County where I taught elementary school for two years, before moving on to teach math at the middle school level. After 7 years in Prince George’s County, I joined MCPS as a middle school math teacher. I spent 3 more years in the classroom, before moving into administration. I worked as an administrator at Col. E. Brooke Lee MS for 2 years before coming back to where I started - elementary school! It was the best decision I’ve ever made! I spent 5 years as an elementary assistant principal at Flower Hill ES in Gaithersburg. I served as the principal intern here at Sherwood ES for a year prior to being appointed principal in 2012.
First and foremost, what I value and believe to be the most important component to our success is our relationships. In the past year, I have been fortunate enough to have formed strong relationships with the teachers and students at Sherwood. I have also gotten to know many of the parents and have worked closely with our wonderful PTA.
My primary focus will always be on the instructional program at Sherwood. We will continue our emphasis on the implementation of Curriculum 2.0 and on communicating the new curriculum to parents. It is an exciting time for the county and the new curriculum brings a new level of rigor and engagement for all students. We will continue to keep our attention on teaching and learning through this new lens.
It is with great excitement that I look forward to working with the Sherwood community for another year!
Hello Sherwood Families! I am so excited to be your assistant principal! Here is a little information about who I am. I grew up in Maryland and went to Howard County Public Schools for my entire K-12 schooling. I graduated from Long Reach High School and went on to graduate from Towson University with an Elementary Education degree.
I began my teaching career where my schooling began, in Howard County. I taught 3rd and 4th grades for seven years, before serving as a Reading Specialist for 5 years. This is my first year with Montgomery County Public Schools and my first year as an Assistant Principal.
Building relationships, I believe, is the foundation to providing an equitable education for all of our students. While in Howard County, I facilitated mentor groups, and provided several community programs to help families feel safe and valued in our schools. I look forward to working with our PTA and other community partners to bring the same energy and focus to continuing Sherwood ES’s work of making this a school where all children feel included and have a sense of belonging.
If you have any questions, comments, or concerns, feel free to reach out to me, and I thank you for entrusting us with your most valuable asset everyday.
Matthew Vaughn-Smith (“Mr.V-S”)
