GSA Meeting: Today is our first meeting of GSA after school in room 360. GSA is a safe, fun place for LGBTQIA+ students and allies. Join us as we kick off a GREAT year of GSA!

It's National Hispanic Heritage Month: Did you know it’s National Hispanic Heritage Month? Each year, Americans observe National Hispanic Heritage Month from September 15 to October 15, by celebrating the histories, cultures and contributions of American citizens whose ancestors came from Spain, Mexico, the Caribbean and Central and South America.

The observation started in 1968 as Hispanic Heritage Week and was expanded in 1988 to cover a 30-day period starting on September 15 and ending on October 15.

The day of September 15 is significant because it is the anniversary of independence for Latin American countries Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras and Nicaragua. In addition, Mexico and Chile celebrate their independence days on September 16 and September18, respectively.

As of July 1, 2019, the Hispanic population of the United States was 60.6 million people, making people of Hispanic origin the nation's largest ethnic or racial minority (18.5% of the total U.S. population).

Additionally: This year’s theme - Hispanics: Be Proud of Your Past, Embrace the Future - invites Hispanics to embrace their backgrounds , to be proud of who they are and where they came from.

National Hispanic Heritage Month Contest: Celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month with the media center! Pick up a Destiny scavenger hunt from the Books in Spanish shelf in the media center or use the link in the RHMS Course tile-media center in myMCPS classroom under the monthly spotlight to get started! Submit your answer by Oct. 15th and you could win a prize!
