Helpful Hints for Incoming 6th Graders

6th grade Helpful Hints #1 – Welcome to Rocky Hill

Helpful Hints #1 Flyer

Hi, and welcome to Rocky Hill Middle School! My name is Lorie Quinn, and I am the team leader for the 6th grade. Over the next few weeks, the 6th grade team will be sending out weekly tips for transitioning to middle school. Our goal is to help make the transition easier for the students and the parents.

The beginning of middle school is an important time in your child’s life, even if it’s virtually. The transition to middle school brings anticipation, new opportunities, anxiety, excitement, and challenges. Your child will have to adjust to a seven new teachers, a new online teaching platform (myMCPS Classroom), a new grading system, and meeting new classmates online. Organization and communication throughout the school year will be vital to their success.

While we will not be with your child physically in the classroom we are here to help in any way possible! It is important that they attend classes daily and adhere to the schedule (to be sent out later in August). Teachers will be available to support your child’s academics just like always, but using different formats (office hours, classtime, google docs, personalized videos, email and many other applications). Our counseling department is here and ready to support your child, if needed, with the transition to middle school.

Be sure to check out our Rocky Hill MS website for the most updated information: http://www.montgomeryschoolsmd.org/schools/rockyhillms/ Be sure to look at the Back to School Information page as it has the supply list and information about our virtual orientation will be posted here. Tip #2 – Orientation

Helpful Hints #2-Orientation

WOW! Can you believe it is mid-August already? The 6th grade team has been planning for the new school year, and we are very excited to meet our newest Wildcats. While we are sad not to meet them in person, we can’t wait to virtually welcome the incoming class of 2026!!! We will continue to have high expectations for our students and provide them with excellent online instruction, while keeping grace in mind under the current pandemic situation.

The 6th Grade Team will be having an online Zoom summer orientation on August 27th. Students will have an opportunity to meet their teachers, hear about expectations for online learning, and learn what to do on the first day of school (August 31st). We will also discuss supplies, life at Rocky Hill, and play Kahoot! More details will be coming! It will be posted on the Rocky Hill website and sent via Connect Ed. The August 27 Orientation is optional although we hope you will attend if possible! The session will not be recorded, but a slideshow will be posted on the RH website afterwards for students who were unable to attend. Please note that schedules will NOT be shared on August 27.

The 6th Grade Team has also been working hard on creating an online Orientation for the first week of school that will be fun, engaging, and meaningful. Teachers will be spending time the first week of school getting to know your child and sharing Orientation topics. It is vital that students attend ALL classes during the first week of school, so they understand what will be expected of them and how to get help. During the first week of school they will also learn about new technology, organizational tips, grades & accountability, will be building relationships with their teachers and classmates, and so much more!
