NHS FAQs

What is the National Honor Society?

The National Honor Society is an organization that recognizes outstanding students. Its purpose is to further develop these students through active involvement in school activities and community service.

What are the four pillars of the National Honor Society?

Scholarship – Members must have a strong academic background and must maintain an acceptable grade point average (3.6 cGPA and 4.1 wGPA) in order to maintain membership in good standing in NHS.

Character – Members are held to a higher standard of conduct to serve as examples to their fellow students. They must also conduct themselves in a respectable manner. Academic integrity is a priority.

Leadership – Members must demonstrate their leadership within the school community. They must also have leadership experience prior to joining.

Service – Members are expected to serve and participate in their community through actions and projects. In order to be eligible students must have recorded 75 hours of SSL, although most have many more.

What are the obligations of the National Honor Society?

  • Members are required to earn 25 SSL hours for each year they are in the National Honor Society. At least 15 service hours must be earned through tutoring. There will be a service project that members can participate in to help earn the required hours. The Chapter has made a commitment to individual tutoring, lunchtime tutoring, and the evening tutoring program at Rocking Horse Community Center.  Members are expected to help meet those obligations.
  • There is a $15 yearly dues after being accepted in the National Honor Society.
  • Members are obligated to plan and implement one individual service project prior to graduation.
  • Meetings are mandatory as scheduled.
  • Members MUST maintain their GPA standing.
