Student Service Learning (SSL) Information

Information Update for SSL Summer 2020:

Students can continue to engage in MCPS SSL opportunities during the summer, including select virtual/remote opportunities that follow the temporarily amended guidelines posted on the MCPS SSL webpage ( All SSL opportunities can be found on the Montgomery County Volunteer Center website (; these opportunities will be tagged with the blue MCPS SSL banner and graduation cap icon. For individual approval to engage in service opportunities not listed on the MCVC website, students should complete MCPS Form 560-50 ( email the request to To learn more about the MCPS SSL program, please view our program overview at June 5, students should hold on to any SSL forms and turn them into their school’s SSL coordinator in the fall. SSL coordinators will accept any SSL forms that students were unable to turn in at the end of the 2019-2020 school year, as well as any SSL forms for service completed during the summer of 2020. If you have any questions, please email your school’s SSL coordinator or the MCPS SSL office at Thank you!

All students must earn a minimum of 75 hours of community service by the end of their high school senior year to graduate from a Maryland high school. 30 hours are earned throughout the three years of middle school, and these hours are earned during the school year within school hours. 10 hours are earned in each grade, and these hours are automatically entered at the end of each school year.

Students earning all 75 hours before graduating middle school will be given the Superintendent’s SSL Award. This award may be earned only once in middle school.

MCPS has pre-approved many organizations for SSL.  Hours can be earned from these organizations beginning the summer before 6th grade.  The Montgomery County Volunteer Center website lists volunteer opportunities for people of all ages, not just MCPS students.  Not all the organizations on the website are MCPS pre-approved!

A graduation cap indicates organizations or opportunities that meet MCPS SSL guidelines. Once the volunteering is completed, Form 560-51 must be submitted and approved by our T.W. Pyle Middle School SSL Coordinator.  Forms can be found in the Student Assignment Book and on the website

All PTAs and public schools are preapproved for SSL hours and still must follow the SSL guidelines for specific activities.

If a student wishes to earn hours from an organization NOT preapproved by MCPS for SSL, students must submit the MCPS Form 560-50 Individual SSL Request to their school SSL coordinator at least 2 weeks in advance of the service date for approval. Failure to get pre-approval will result in hours not being accepted. You can find this form in the SAB and on the MCPS website

All SSL hours must be recorded and verified using form 560-51.

The deadlines set by MCPS for SSL submission are:

  • Service completed during the summer: last Friday in September
  • Service completed during the summer and 1st semester: first Friday in January
  • Service completed during the summer, 1st semester & 2nd semester to be recognized for the Certificate of Meritorious Service (High School Seniors) OR the Superintendent’s SSL Award (Middle School): the first Friday in April
  • Service completed during the summer, 1st semester & 2nd semester: first Friday in June.

Deadlines are listed at the top of each form and are announced via the morning announcements and the Panther Weekly emails.  Forms handed in after each deadline will NOT be accepted. Over 6,000 forms are handed in over the course of the year at T. W. Pyle, so deadlines are important.

There is a basket in Mrs. DeMino’s classroom, Room 115, for each grade to collect the completed SSL forms.

Do NOT hold on to SSL forms until the end of the year.  The closer to the deadline it gets the longer it may take to get entered into the system due to the size of the Panther Student Body.

If SSL forms are NOT turned in before each deadline the hours will NOT show up on the corresponding report card due to required County processing time.  They WILL be visible in MyMCPS after entry.

All forms turned in for SSL credit must be originals, copies and faxes cannot be accepted.

Please follow ALL THE DIRECTIONS on the form and be clear.

All portions must either be typed or completed in Black or Blue INK.  NO PENCIL!

If there is anything missing information or handwriting cannot be read, the form will be returned to the student and that will delay entry of the data. If you have any questions regarding SSL Hours, please contact Mrs. DeMino
