John Poole Middle School Athletics Information

Overview of MCPS Middle School Athletics

The Montgomery County Public Schools (MCPS) middle school interscholastic athletics program is a planned extension of the physical education instructional and intramural programs for students in Grades 7 and 8. Although the athletics program offers a higher level of competition, its primary purpose is to provide the opportunity for advanced skill development for all students with interests and/or talents in athletics.

The middle school interscholastic athletics program operates under the jurisdiction of the Montgomery County Public Middle School Principals Association. Ms. Kathy Green, Athletics Specialist in the Office of Teaching, Learning and Schools, is responsible for the administration of the program and development of schedules and standards.

Overview of Timberwolf Athletics

We are excited to provide your student with the greatest education-based athletics season!

We R.A.I.S.E.

We will be following all Health and Safety Guidelines that are mandated by MCPS.

This year will be our second year of online registration via ParentVue Portal.  Remember that the Pre-Participation Physical is good for two calendar years and must be scanned and uploaded during the registration process. The COVID questionnaire which is the last page of the physical must be completed and be scanned and uploaded during the registration process

Due to high numbers of participants many of our teams will have several days of tryouts before the team selection is made.  Once the team has been selected the coach will send out a personal email stating whether they made the team or not.

Practices will be held on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays from 2:50-4:20 p.m.

Games are also held on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays.  Start times are posted on the athletic schedules below.

The season will consist of five-six competitions against other middle schools within Montgomery County.

Away Games:  The student-athletes will be dismissed early from 7th period and report to the locker room to change into their JPMS uniform and board the MCPS approved charter bus to take to their away competition.  Away competitions starting times are listed on the schedule below.   The bus will bring them back to JPMS.

Home Games: The student athletes will report directly to the locker room at the end of the school day and change into their JPMS uniforms. Then report to the designated meeting place for the team.  Home competitions starting times are listed on the schedule below.

Any cancellations of practices/competitions will be made by 1:00 p.m. and will be posted in the myMCPS athletic classroom and an announcement will be made at JPMS.

Softball Information: This sport is slow pitch softball but the coaches will be teaching many aspects of the game that can be carried over to baseball and fastpitch softball.  All equipment will be provided by the JPMS Athletic Dept.  The student athletes are more than welcome to bring their own gear if they choose.  Cleats (not metal) are recommended but not required to be worn during practices and games.

Co-Ed Cross Country Information: The course that will be run during the meet will be no longer than 1.5 miles.  Practices will incorporate a variety of activities with a  variety running distance with many of them being longer than 1.5 miles.  Many of our practices take place off campus so that longer distances can be run. The student athletes will be expected to follow safety protocol while off campus which will be discussed by the coaches and a parent/guardian permission slip must be turned in, in order for them to run off campus.  Due to the many miles that will be run during the season a good pair of running shoes are recommended.
