I am Mrs. Ichniowski, the counselor here at Page. Staff, students and parents call me Mrs. “I”. For those of you who our new to our school, I would like to answer a couple of frequently asked questions about the counseling program.
WHAT IS AN ELEMENTARY COUNSELING PROGRAM?
The counseling program is a developmental program for all students that emphasizes several areas of Academic Achievement, Educational Decision-making, and Personal and Social Development as a student. The counseling program promotes successful schooling by helping students deal with greater independence, interact with other people, and become effective group members. A positive concept of “self” as a student is critical to a child’s success in school. The counseling program helps students feel good about their capacity to succeed in schools and strengthens their ability to meet the academic and social challenges of this environment.
WHAT DO ELEMENTARY COUNSELORS DO?
Counselors deliver services in a variety of ways. We conduct large group guidance activities (i.e. class meetings) with students and provide counseling to individuals and small groups of students who have problems in areas mentioned above. These services generally are initiated by students or staff who recognize the need for a particular issue to be addressed. Parents can also make requests for help. In addition, we support the overall school program by designing and leading activities necessary for the effective implementation of the counseling program. Such activities include kindergarten orientation, staff consultation, new student orientation, and participation in meetings to determine supports for children.
I enjoy meeting and talking with parents and I encourage you to get in touch with me to discuss any aspect of your child’s development. If you would like to talk or meet with me, simply call the school number (301-989-5672) and ask to speak with Mrs. I.
