Sunday Evening Message: June 13, 2021

Good evening, Northwest Families, this is Jimmy D’Andrea, principal of Northwest High School, with your Sunday evening message.

Last Day of School: Wednesday, June 16

This Wednesday, June 16, is the final day of the school year.  Students must submit any outstanding assignments for 4th marking period by 12:00 noon on Wednesday.

Schedule for This Week: Monday, June 14 – Wednesday, June 16

In-person learning will occur this week for students in grades 9 and 11 who selected a partial in-person learning experience.  We will have a regular “A” day on Monday and a regular “B” day on Tuesday.  All classes will have optional student check-ins on Wednesday morning, but the schedule is different than normal.  For the complete schedule for this week, please select “Daily Student Schedule Information” in the “News” section of the Northwest website.

Returning School Materials and Picking Up Yearbooks: Monday, June 14 – Tuesday, June 15

For grades 9-11, we are asking students and/or parents to return school materials in the lower parking lot this week at one of the following times:

  • Monday, June 14, from 10:00 am to 1:00 pm
  • Tuesday, June 15, from 7:30 am to 1:00 pm or from 4:00 pm to 6:00 pm

When students and/or parents come, they are asked to bring any items that need to be returned to Northwest, including textbooks, athletic uniforms/musical instruments that belong to the school, media center items, and calculators checked out from the math department.  These items should be placed in bags with the student’s name and ID number clearly printed on them or attached to them.  Students and/or parents will also be able to pick up yearbooks that have been ordered and/or purchase on site.  Students returning to MCPS in the fall should keep school chromebooks over the summer.

Student Course Selections for 2021-2022

Parents are encouraged to review their student's course selections for the 2021-2022 school year in ParentVUE by clicking on the "Course Request" tab. Earlier this year, students met with their counselors to select courses that align with graduation requirements and interests.  If you have any questions or would like to make a change, please email your student's counselor no later than this Wednesday, June 16 (Counselor Email Addresses). Students will receive their official class schedule on the first day of school in the fall.

Congratulations to Retirees!

Please join me in congratulating Ms. Becky Ahearn, world languages resource teacher; Mr. Greg Burdick, IT systems specialist; and Mr. Brian Seymour, social studies teacher; on their retirements at the end of this school year.   We wish them all the best in their new endeavors!

Success of Graduation Ceremony

Thank you to all of the individuals who made our graduation ceremony so successful last Wednesday.  While there were many people who helped, I want to extend a special thank you to Ms. Ericka Singleton and Ms. Kim Summers for their countless hours of hard work to coordinate all of our end-of-year senior activities and the entire graduation ceremony.

New School Phone Numbers

The Northwest High School phone system has recently been upgraded.  As a result, all phone numbers for the school have been changed.  The main office phone number is now (240) 740-7100, and all other department and office phone numbers will be posted on the Northwest website later this month.  Please note that the old phone numbers will continue to work through the end of June.

Virtual Summer Workshops Sponsored by the College & Career Information Center

Virtual workshops for students and parents are being offered online throughout the summer to prepare our students for college and careers!  Topics include post-graduation options, financial aid and scholarships, the college application process, and more.  The workshops are free, but registration is required.  For more information, and to register, please select “College Career” at the top of the Northwest website (Virtual Summer Workshop Registration).

Choral Performance for Graduation Ceremony

The Northwest High School Chamber Singers and Treble Choir recorded “You Will Be Found,” from the musical Dear Evan Hansen for the graduation ceremony last Wednesday.  They wanted to share the video with the community and hope that viewers are inspired by the message of belonging after these past 15 months of isolation. The students worked very hard to produce this, and special thanks to Mr. Avi Silber, music technology teacher, for editing the project. The choral music program wishes our seniors the very best and can’t wait to make music in person again next school year!

PTSA Brick Tile Fundraiser

The PTSA is continuing to build the Jag Legacy Wall by selling personalized, engraved brick tiles that will be permanently displayed on the wall near the Northwest Auditorium.  These tiles make great graduation gifts, can celebrate a team or club accomplishment, or can honor a committed staff member or volunteer.  The tiles will be installed in the fall.  For more details, and to order, please visit https://www.bricksrus.com/donorsite/nwhsptsa

Final Transcripts for Seniors

If seniors need a final transcript sent to the college or university they will be attending, they are asked to complete the Final Transcript Request Form that is located on the “Counseling” page on the Northwest website.  There is no charge for this transcript.  Final transcripts will be sent as soon as they become available in mid-July.

As always, please do not hesitate to contact us at any time if you have questions or concerns.  Thank you for your support of Northwest, and have a great evening!
