Carson Scholar Application Essays Due

When: Thursday, December 8, 2022 from 12:00 am - 3:00 pm

Description:

The Carson Scholars Fund awards $1,000 college scholarships to students in grades 4-11 who excel academically and are dedicated to serving their communities. Scholarship winners receive the honor of being named “Carson Scholars” and are awarded an Olympic-sized medal and a trophy for their school to celebrate their accomplishments.

Carson Scholars must have a minimum GPA of 3.75, inclusive of English, Reading, World Studies, Math, Science and World Languages and display humanitarian qualities through community service. Scholarships are awarded solely on the basis of academic achievement and humanitarian qualities, without regard to financial need, ethnicity, creed or religion.

Neelsville MS will nominate one student for the Carson Scholars Program for 2022.  The student will be selected based on their essay and current documented completion of community service.

It is crucial that participants and their parents/guardians understand that they are not Carson Scholar Award recipients during any school-sponsored applicant selection process prior to submission of the application. Submission of an essay is not a guarantee of an award.

Students were given information about the essay prior to the Thanksgiving break. Here are the categories we use to score the essay:

  • CONTENT: An essay with ample information, including supporting details.
  • ORGANIZATION: An organized essay with a well-developed beginning, middle and end.
  • STYLE/MECHANICS & USAGE: Interesting, varied, imaginative and age-appropriate vocabulary. Correct punctuation, capitalization, spelling and paragraph distinction.
  • FOCUS: Appropriate information to make the reader clearly understand the ideas being presented.

Essays MUST be typed – hand written essays will not be accepted.  Essays are due to Ms. Greene in the Counseling Office no later than 3:00 pm on Thursday, December 8, 2022.  You may also turn an essay in via email to this address:  Robin_M_Greene@mcpsmd.org .  This is a final deadline.  Nothing will be accepted after 3:00 pm on December 8, 2022.  Students will be notified of the nominee before the Winter Break.
