Science

Earth, Sun, Moon, and Stars

Unit Driving Question(s):

What is the universe and what goes on in stars? What are the predictable patterns caused by Earth’s movement in the solar system? What is the process for developing potential design solutions?

Unit Anchoring Phenomena:

Students observe the phenomenon of star trails, and explore the relationship between the Earth, Sun, Moon, and other stars.  They begin by using a model to investigate the relative size and distance of the Earth, Sun, Moon and stars.  Students ask questions about the apparent brightness of stars, and investigate how distance from Earth affects the apparent brightness of the star.  They make observations of the length and direction of shadows throughout the day to develop an understanding of Earth’s rotation.  Students engage in modeling to investigate how Earth’s revolution around the Sun explains changing positions of constellations in the night sky.   At the end of the unit, students propose a solution to local light pollution to ensure success of a stargazing event.
