Second Grade


Module 1- Solve one- and two- step word problems involving addition and subtraction. Quickly and accurately add and subtract numbers up to 20. 

Module 2- Measure and estimate lengths of objects in standard units such as inches and centimeters. Solve addition and subtraction word problems involving length.Module 3- Understand what the different digits mean in a three-digit number. Count within 1000; skip count  by 5’s, 10’s, 100’s. Read and write numbers to 1000 using base-ten numerals, number names, and expanded form. Compare two three-digit numbers.


Unit 1- Students will read and compare selections about the government to understand what the government does and why it is important. Students will work on the following skills; identify the main topic of a text, identify author’s purpose, recount story events, acknowledge differences in the points of view of characters , compare and contrast key points in two texts on the same topic.

Unit 2- Students will read and compare selections featuring different characters who work to resolve problems. Students will work on the following skills; recount story events, determine the central message, describe how characters respond to major events and challenges, compare and contrast two versions of the same story.

Unit 3- Students will read and compare selections about plants and animals to understand how living things get what they need in their habitats. Students will work on the following skills; identify the main topic of a text, explain how images contribute to a clarify a text, use evidence to draw inferences, recount story events.

Science/Social Studies

Social Studies- Students will explain how rules and laws are made and necessary to maintain order and protect citizens. Students will describe the rights and responsibilities of being a participating member of the school and the community. 

Science-Students will plan and conduct an investigation to describe and classify different kinds of materials by their observable properties. Students will  make observations to construct an evidence-based account of how an object made of a small set of pieces can be disassembled and made into a new object.
