    The Geography Club was a new addition to students’ list of choices for after school activities clubs at Loiederman for the '07/'08 school year.

    The purpose of the club is to increase student interest and awareness about geography, and more specifically, to prepare students for the annual Loiederman Geographic Bee competition.

    The Geography Club is both educational and fun, incorporating computer and board games to increase geography skills and knowledge. Students also get the opportunity play along as they watch the video of the previous years’ National Geographic Bee, hosted by Alex Trebek. To make things even more interesting, at every club meeting students have the opportunity to win geography-themed prizes, such as coins, bills and stamps from around the world.

    The club meets once a week for the first semester of school (until about the date of the Loiederman Geographic Bee competition). 

    While participation in the Geography Club does guarantee one entry into the Loiederman Geographic Bee competition, it does help prepare students. 

    The Loiederman Geographic Bee competition is open to all students, whether they are in the club or not. Every year, in about mid-December, all 6th, 7th and 8 th graders take a written geography test in their Social Studies classes (the test does not count towards their grade). Students who receive the top ten scores on this test then move on to the Loiederman Geographic Bee competition, which usually takes place in early January. The competition is an exciting event, with other students, as well as teachers, administrators and parents among the audience members, anxiously watching to see who among the ten finalists will receive the honor of being the Loiederman Geographic Bee champion. All ten finalists are awarded prizes for their achievement.

    The winner of the school competition takes another written test, and students with the top 100 scores from across the state then move on to the state-level of competition. The champion from each state competition represents their state in the National Geographic Bee. (The National Geographic Bee is open to students in grades four through eight.)
