From Mrs. Melnick

Mrs. MelnickDear Flower Valley Elementary School Families,

I am honored to be in my tenth year as principal of Flower Valley Elementary School. I want every child at this school to thrive as a capable and competent student. By working together with all of you, and our dedicated staff, I am confident we can make this happen.

I have a wide range of educational experiences over the past 25 years. Prior to coming to Flower Valley Elementary, I was an elementary and middle school teacher, an elementary school counselor, a high school testing coordinator, an adjunct professor at Trinity University, and a student teaching supervisor at American University. In addition, I served as the Assistant Principal at Flower Valley Elementary for the 2009-2011 school years, and the Principal Intern at Cloverly Elementary for the 2011-12 school year. Returning to Flower Valley Elementary is like returning "home" for me.

My core values guide my work at Flower Valley. I value all relationships, a high quality instructional program, equitable experiences, and a safe and peaceful school environment.

As a parent of two sons who went through MCPS schools and recently graduated from college, I understand how important it is for school and home to communicate on a regular basis, and work together to ensure that every child thrives and is successful. I plan to regularly communicate with you in many ways, including this Principal’s Page, as well as through a weekly phone and/or email  "Seven O’Clock Sundays" message from me reviewing upcoming FVES events/activities. You can also follow our school and me on Twitter: @FlowerValleyES and @FVPrincipal. My email is and you can call me at 240-740-1780.

Thank you for your support as we work together to make this a great year for all our children.

Sincerely yours,

Gay E. Melnick
