Q: What is MCCPTA?
A. MCCPTA is an association of local PT(S)As in Montgomery County, chartered by Maryland PTA. MCCPTA assists local PTAs by exchanging and pooling information and experience, and by interfacing with Montgomery County Public Schools (MCPS). We serve to help PTA leadership countywide on issues affecting children. MCCPTA represents almost 48,000 members--and hopes to grow to over 50,000 in 2013-2014--who belong to our 190 local PT(S)As.
Q. What does MCCPTA do?
A. Glad you asked. Here are a just a few highlights of our work. MCCPTA:
Trains roughly 500 local PTA officers and members annually at Spring and Fall MCCPTA training events.
- Communicates throughout the year through websites, internet tools, and email.
- Hosts monthly MCCPTA Presents! programs that feature experts and leaders on topics of parent interest.
- Coordinates the county-level Reflections Program, a National PTA program supporting the student creativity via the arts.
- Advocates for budget priorities before the Board of Education and County Council on behalf of all members, and has a place at the table during MCPS budget discussions. MCCPTA positions are established by the consensus of all Montgomery County PTAs and PTSAs through monthly Delegates Assemblies.
- Champions well-maintained safe, secure, school facilities, equitable technology access for all schools, burden of proof legislation, judicious curriculum roll-out, professional development, after-school programs, and the reinstatement of School Resource Officers (SROs) in every cluster.
- Supports edible gardens on every school's grounds.
- Holds fora and workshops on budgets, curriculum, membership, and more.
- Coordinates Cultural Arts showcases featuring vetted artists with outstanding programs for students every Fall.
- Provides Student Service Learning (SSL) assistance and information on opportunities for all schools.
- Participates in interview processes for MCPS central office leadership positions.
- Hosts a high school model United Nations.
- And much, much more.
Q: I'm a PTA member in Montgomery County. Am I part of MCCPTA?
A. Yes! When you join your local PT(S)A, you automatically become part of MCCPTA. $1 of your membership dues go to MCCPTA. In return, MCCPTA volunteers devote thousands of hours to support students, families, and schools throughout the county. MCCPTA has an executive committee, area vice presidents and cluster coordinators who represent your local high school and feeder schools as well as committee chairs who focus on issues such as health and safety concerns, special education issues, school curriculum, school budget issues, training for local PTA leaders, and more. Each local PTA has representatives who participate in monthly "Delegates Assembly" meetings, giving every local PTA a voice in MCCPTA. Your local membership gives you a voice at many levels!
Q. How do l keep in touch with MCCPTA activities and news?
A. To keep up with county-wide happenings and events, MCCPTA maintains this website, an email list, tweets, eLists, and a Facebook page. You can subscribe to our e-mailing list, like us on Facebook, follow us on Twitter, or join our Linked In network from the MCCPTA Main page.
MCCPTA delegates, board members, and some committees also have dedicated E-lists. MCCPTA Board members and delegates should contact MCCPTA via elistsmod@mccpta.com to be added to these groups. Q. MCCPTA really does a lot! What should I do if I want to be more involved at the county level?
A. MCCPTA welcomes all PTA members to any meetings. Board of Directors meetings are usually held the first Thursday of the month at 7:30 PM at Carver Educational Services Center; Delegates Assembly meetings are usually the 4th Tuesday of the month at 7:30 PM at Carver; committee meetings are announced and published via various MCCPTA communications tools.
