What is the Mosaic Contest?

Mosaic is a county-wide writing contest run through the Friends of the Library Montgomery County (FOLMC). Entering the contest is optional. For the past couple of years, Eastern had county-level winners.

What is the theme/topic of the writing?

“My Culture under COVID-19”

What style of writing?

Entries can be in the form of an essay, short story, or poem (including a spoken word or written version of a rap).

Clarification:

What is “culture”? One definition from the dictionary is “a set of shared attitudes, values, goals and practices that characterizes an institution or organization.” Culture does not just mean race, ethnicity or country of origin. Culture can also be about religion, your family’s own culture, a group that shares the same interests and activities. For example, other groups that have their own culture: schools, musical theater fans, sports teams, etc. Use whatever group you wish for culture.

Suggestion:

On paper or digitally, brainstorm all the cultures you belong to and the different ways COVID has affected you. Narrow it down to what most speaks to you. Remember: you may write an essay, a poem or a short story.
