Mission:

Cabin John Middle School Counseling Services are staffed by professional school counselors who advocate and collaborate to provide a comprehensive, developmentally appropriate school counseling program to address the academic, career, social and emotional growth of all students. We value and respond to the diversity and individual differences in our community, ensuring equitable access to opportunities, and rigorous curriculum for all students.

Vision:

As professional school counselors, we are dedicated to empowering every student to achieve academic success, personal and social growth, wellness and career exploration.

Counseling Standards:

The Counseling Program at Cabin John Middle School supports student development in three broad domains: academic, career, and social/emotional. These domains promote growth mindsets and positive behaviors that enhance the learning process and create a culture of college and career readiness for all students.

The Cabin John Middle School Counseling Department has an extensive list of presentations and activities scheduled. Our focus this year is three-tiered:

Academic Development : The school counseling program will implement strategies and activities to support and maximize each student's ability to learn.

Career Development : Emphasizes a connection between education and the world of work and a plan for transitioning from school to post-secondary and/or the world of work.

Social/Emotional Development : Through mindfulness, students will learn how to manage their emotions and develop their interpersonal skills. Mindfulness is a way of thinking which focuses awareness on the present. Practicing mindfulness can help students learn to focus, manage stress, regulate emotions and develop a positive outlook. Research has shown a clear link between positive emotional classroom climates and academic achievement.

We want our students to be happy and well while striving for academic success. Adolescents who are mindful tend to experience greater well-being, more positive emotions and fewer negative emotions and less anxiety. Our goal is to educate students to achieve calm and reduce stress which will allow for greater learning.

Counselors will provide Mindful activities weekly on Fridays during all three lunch periods.

  1. Each week we will have a Mindful Quote of the Week with an inspirational message that students and teachers can hold on to and relate back to the lessons being taught for the week.
  2. Monthly strategies will be presented to students and posted on the Cabin John website providing steps and strategies on how to reduce stress and cope in a positive manner.

Counseling Services Delivery:

Counselors deliver services in a variety of ways.

Direct services are in-person interactions between school counselors and students to include:

  • delivery of structured lessons
  • individual student planning to help students meet personal goals and develop future plans
  • responsive services where counselors meet the immediate needs and concerns of a student in individual or small-group settings or crisis response.

Indirect services are provided on behalf of students as a result of the school counselors' interactions with others to include:

  • referrals for additional assistance
  • consultations and collaboration with parents, teachers, other educators and community organizations

Classroom Lessons:

The Cabin John Middle School Counseling Department will focus on two areas of growth to guide students towards preparation for academic excellence and social emotional learning. The two areas of focus are Mindfulness and Family Connection by Naviance.

We are incorporating Mindfulness into our school day. Mindfulness is a way of thinking which focuses awareness on the present. Practicing mindfulness can help students learn to focus, manage stress, regulate emotions and develop a positive outlook. Research has shown a clear link between positive emotional classroom climates and academic achievement.

We want our students to be happy and well striving for academic success. Adolescents who are mindful tend to experience greater well-being, more positive emotions and fewer negative emotions, and less anxiety. Our goal is to educate students to achieve calm and reduce stress which will allow for greater learning.

Family Connection by Naviance is a comprehensive web-based tool that provides activities and lessons to help students explore and plan for high school classes, college and career. Students can discover their strengths and talents, explore career and college options, and research the high school courses they need to reach their goals. Parents can also utilize the tool to help their child(ren) plan for the future. Through this application we will ensure all students are prepared for success by demonstrating readiness for post-secondary study and /or the workforce. The career search option includes a Career Interest Profiler, a tool that can help students discover the types of work activities and careers that match their interest. Students can also search possible careers by keyword, category, personality type, cluster and pathways. Results will include: skills necessary, education required, salary chart and schools offering education/ training.

Counselors will conduct group and classroom lessons where we will teach Mindful strategies and practices, and provide guided lessons to empower students to take ownership of their learning through Family Connections by Naviance.

Personal Body Safety Lessons

During the month of September the Counselor's and PE Department are taking an active role in the prevention of child abuse and neglect through Personal Body Safety Lessons.

Please read this letter explaining the lessons and view the PBS Lessons overview presentation.

Questions about High School

MSP participants were asked to list any and all questions about high school registration and/or college. We compiled all of the questions, organized them into categories, and sent them to various counselors for the correct answers. Please use this list to guide your student through the registration process in the coming academic years!
