Dear Parents,

As the full-time school nurse, I want to take this opportunity to welcome you and your child/children to Briggs Chaney Middle School.  I am a Registered Nurse employed by Montgomery County Department of Health and Human Services, Division of School Health Services.  My responsibilities include giving evidence-based competent and quality care to students through direct care, health appraisal, counseling, referrals, and health education.  I work closely with the parents, medical providers, and BCMS staff to develop health care plans for students with medical needs, as well as advising and training staff to respond to specific student needs and emergency medical situations.

If your child becomes injured or ill while at school, there is a health room where he/she/they can receive basic first aid and rest for a short period of time.   The Health Room Technician is Ms. Patti Cunningham.   She is a certified medical technician, with years of experience, certified in First Aid and CPR providing care for our Briggs students.  We are both here every school day of the week from 8am-3pm.

When a child is ill or injured, parents/guardians will be notified, and it is requested that the student is promptly picked up from the school. It is MOST important that parents/guardians provide the school with an accurate, operational home and/or work telephone number as well as provide the name of an emergency back-up person in the event parents/guardians cannot be reached.

Please be advised that NO medication (prescription or over the counter) will be provided in the school without the written permission of the parent/guardian and an order from the physician. A school authorization form must be used for this purpose and can be obtained from the school, or the MCPS web site, parent/student, medical forms.   Please contact the Health Room at 301-288-8330 with any questions or concerns about the health care or well-being of your child while in school.

We look forward to supporting your child’s health and wish you and your child a very successful school year.

Sincerely,

Ms. Kayla Gisseman, RN BSN
