Counseling Vision Statement
The students of Briggs Chaney Middle School (BCMS) are high-achieving learners who will go on to graduate college or pursue a post-secondary education. They will be career and life ready, equipped with the skills necessary to meet the expectations and demands of 21st century leaders. All students participate in an academic curriculum that promotes equity and rigor to achieve academic and personal/social growth that is supported by a comprehensive school counseling program that collaborates with school, family and community stakeholders. As dynamic learners with grit and dedication, our students will maximize on their full potential, making a positive difference in our school and community.
Counseling Mission Statement
The Briggs Chaney Middle School Counseling Department advocates and collaborates with community stakeholders to cultivate an environment that promotes college, career and life readiness in all students. Our comprehensive program addresses the academic, personal/social and career development of all students and prepares them to be global leaders of the 21st century.
A little About us!!
I grew up in Silver Spring, MD and attended MCPS K-12. I am a proud graduate of Briggs Chaney MS and Paint Branch HS. I left the MD suburbs and headed to Philadelphia to attend Temple University where I double majored in Public Relations and Broadcasting. I worked for fashion PR for five years before transitioning into education. I am a proud member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc.
I grew up in Gaithersburg, Maryland and graduated from Quince Orchard HS in 2006. I received my undergraduate degree in Psychology from Salisbury University and my Master's Degree in School Counseling from Loyola University. This is my second year as a School Counselor and I am so happy to be able to do what I love!
I live in Columbia, Maryland and have a Siberian Husky who I adore! He is 6 years old and he is my best fur friend. We love going on hikes, playing soccer, and going to the beach together!
I was born in Trinidad and came to the US at age 11. I attended Prince George's County Public School. I loving working in the counseling office with students, staff and parents.
This is my 5th year at BCMS as a school counselor! I graduated from Johns Hopkins School of Education in 2014. I have 2 awesome daughters, a pre-teen and a teen. I love running, reading, and taking trips with my family! GO BEARS!
Supports & Services
Academic & Attendance Support
Peer 2 Peer Tutoring Point of contact: Ms. Clarke
Open to all grade level students seeking support in English, Math, Social Studies, Science or World Language. Time will also be available to reorganize their binders, check to make sure HW assignments have been written down daily in the agenda book, and to work on individualized organizational goals. Students meet every Wednesday after school. Sign up is available in up in the counseling office every Monday and is on a first come first serve basis.
Individualized/Small Group Point of contact: Grade-level counselors
Counselor’s collaborate with grade-level teams to create short-term groups of students to work through academic needs and/or preparation for an upcoming project or test. Arrangements are made between the counselor, students and teachers to meet during the school day and/or after school.
Truancy Prevention Program (TPP) Point of contact: Ms. Beru
This weekly program meets every Monday with their grade level counselor and program staff employed by the Montgomery County State’s Attorney office. Students are identified based on concerns surrounding their school attendance. Weekly sessions review students’ grades, weekly attendance and goal setting. Incentives provided for improved attendance.
Social/ Emotional Support
Be A Friend First (BFF) Group Point of contact: Ms. Beru and Ms. McDermott
This group is facilitated by the Girl Scouts Nation’s Capital. It is available to female students in sixth grade. We will run two groups simultaneously, one for female students enrolled in ESOL and a second group for 6th grade female students.
Male Mentorship Wednesdays Point of contact: Ms. Beru
The group is facilitated through the Fortune Foundation and by its founder, Carl Fortune. This group is for 7th and 8th grade, African-American and Hispanic young men and will take place every other Wednesday beginning on October 19th during 3rd period. The program will run for 12 weeks and provide an opportunity for young males to engage in fun and interactive group discussions with peers and mentors.
Minority Scholars Program (MSP) Point of contact: Ms. Clarke
In collaboration with Blake High School, this after school program meets twice a month with 7th grade male and female students that are paired up with a high school mentor. Students have an opportunity to engage in team building activities, examine current events impacting the youth and explore their feelings around their academic growth and potential as a student.
SOS (Signs of Suicide) Prevention Classroom Lessons Point of contact: Grade-level counselors
All grade level counselors in collaboration with our school PPW and school psychologist, will facilitate this youth suicide prevention program that has demonstrated improved student knowledge and adaptive attitudes about suicide risk and depression. It will teach students the three-step action plan ACT (Acknowledge, Care, Tell).
The Good Grief Group Point of contact: Ms. McDermott
A 7-week support group for students who are affected by the death of a loved one. Referrals are received from the students themselves; parents; or school staff. Sessions are conducted by a Hospice Caring volunteer with the school counselor present at all sessions. Additional information available in the counseling office

College, Career & Life Readiness
Naviance Classroom Lessons Point of contact: Grade-level counselors
Naviance Student (formerly Family Connection) is a web-based tool that addresses four key areas of college and career readiness:
*College and Career Preparation
All students will receive classroom lessons by their grade level counselor. In these lessons, students will log into Naviance and complete grade level assignments where they will explore interests, career pathways, research colleges and create plans for their bright futures.
College & Career Exploration Week
A week long of school-wide events that are centered around conversations and ongoing exposure to college and career readiness for all of our students.
Events are facilitated during the school day and include:

Naviance is a fully integrated platform designed to help raise student accountability and performance across a number of key indicators leading to increased engagement, improvements in academic performance, and overall workplace and college readiness. School Counselors will be delivering Naviance lessons to grades 7 and 8 over the course of the year. Quick Guide to Enrollment
Welcome to Briggs Chaney Middle School. If you are not sure if you are attending Briggs Chaney Middle School, please call the Long-range Planning Office at 240-314-4700 or check the following website: www.mongomeryschoolsmd.org/departments/planning and click on "Find your School".
Students who have not attended a U.S. School anytime during the prior two years should contact the MCPS International Admissions and Enrollment at 301-230-0686 to begin the enrollment process.
All parents/guardians enrolling students (new or reentering MCPS) must provide verification of student's age, student identify, parent/guardian identify, residency, and immunizations, unless homeless.
When coming to register, please bring the following forms completed:
Identity - Person enrolling student must be present
- Legal identification AND
- Proof of relationship to student
Residency - In Montgomery County
- If homeowner, provide copy of current property bill. A copy can be obtained from Montgomery County Department of Finance at 240-777-0311 or at www.montgomerycountymd.gov/finance, OR
- If renter, provide copy of current (less than 1 year old) lease. If lease is more than 1 year old, copy of lease and a current utility bill, OR
- If living in shared housing, provide notarized MCPS form 335-74, Shared Housing Disclosure and either a copy of the current property bill of homeowner or copy of lease of renter with whom student and parent/guardian are living and three appropriate supporting documents.
- Anyone who is not a resident of Montgomery County who would like to request to enroll a non-resident student in MCPS should contact IAE at 301-230-0686.
