Students who are interested in careers related to child development, such as child psychologist, teachers or daycare providers, for example, may meet their graduation requirements of completing a career preparing program by earning four credits in child development. The program is also open to students who do not intend to complete the program. The Child Development Program is articulated with Montgomery College. Students may apply for 3-9 credits when enrolling in the Montgomery College Early Childhood program.
Child and Adolescent Development on-level 1 A/B (9th-12th)
In this gateway course, after 6 weeks of rigorous training, students are responsible for the day-to-day workings of a lab preschool. In 7-9 person teams, student teachers write lesson plans and teach 4-year olds. They also do individual research work and observe and reflect on the preschool children's behavior. There is a weekly seminar class which covers all aspects of child development theory and practice. Students interested in Pre-K through college education, pediatric medicine, physical therapy, family law, psychology, and sociology enroll in this course in preparation for college and career experiences. This course is the first of 4 in the completer courses and is a part of a sequence of courses tied to a possible 9 credits from Montgomery College.
Advanced-level Child Development 2 A/B (10th-12th)
Description: Students will learn to be reflective practitioners using researched-based methods of teaching when working with children. Students will analyze data, interpret and apply educational theories, and utilize technology as a teaching tool. Students will apply developmentally appropriate teaching practices in classroom and field experiences. Students will demonstrate leadership skills in communication, critical thinking, and problem solving. Assuming increased responsibilities for program management, students will develop and implement age-appropriate learning experiences for preschoolers. Upon completion of Child and Adolescent Development 2A/B Advanced-Level, and all certification requirements, students will be eligible to apply for the 90 + 9 Clock Hours Certification.
Advanced-level Child Development 3 A/B (11th and 12th)
Students enhance the development of higher-level teaching and observation skills through independent study, research, advocacy projects, and field experiences. Students analyze current research-based instructional practices and classroom management strategies. Extensive research on careers in education and other child-related fields of study is completed in preparation for education internships. Students identify career goals and continue to develop a professional portfolio.
Internship, Education, Training and Child Studies (12th only)
Students apply knowledge and skill sets acquired in previous required courses to a comprehensive field based experience. Collaborating with mentor teachers and other professionals in educational settings, students participate in program-specific learning, leadership seminars, networking opportunities, and relevant workplace experiences. Students analyze the impact that leadership theories; professional ethics; current trends; and parent, community, and government organizations have on contemporary education and the child care industry.Students explore postsecondary education and career options, and prepare for the interview process. Students complete a professional portfolio that is aligned with the Interstate New Teacher Assessment and Support Consortium and the Montgomery County Public Schools Teacher Performance Standards.
