Student Service Learning (SSL) NEWS:
Students should continue to find opportunities to earn SSL hours throughout the summer.  Remember--in order to earn SSL hours for volunteer service, it must meet specific requirements, and the organization or activity must be pre-approved for MCPS SSL hours.  How can you find out if an organization or activity is pre-approved?  Check the Montgomery County Volunteer Center (MCVC) website.  The links below will take you to the MCVC site directly to pre-approved SSL organizations or activities.  The first link is all pre-approved SSL opportunities that include both face-to-face and virtual only opportunities.  The second link is the page that filters only pre-approved SSL opportunities that are strictly virtual.
If a non-profit organization is not pre-approved for MCPS SSL hours, you can ask their representative to contact the MCPS SSL office at ssl@mcpsmd.org to learn about the process to become pre-approved.  Another option is for the student to complete an Individual SSL Request Form (Links to an external site.) prior to the service.  The SSL coordinator at your school can then approve you to submit SSL hours for work with that organization through the end of that school year.  Below is a district-wide opportunity that is pre-approved right now with a very short turnaround time.  Because this opportunity closes after the MCPS deadline for submitting hours for the current school year, all hours for students participating in this activity will be processed by the county SSL office (not the school).

Montgomery County DHHS COVID-19 Vaccine Video Contest - The Montgomery County Department of Health and Human Services is seeking middle and high school students interested in creating a 30-45 second video PSA to spread awareness about the COVID-19 vaccine. Students may earn 5 SSL hours for quality video submissions and may create a video as a team with up to five students or on their own. All contest entries are due by Friday, June 4, at 5 p.m. Interested students may find additional details and directions for this contest at the following link  (Links to an external site.)and on the flyer (English (Links to an external site.)/Spanish (Links to an external site.)).

Students and parents can view their current SSL status details in Student/ParentVUE! Updated step-by-step directions are available at the following link: https://bit.ly/SSLonVUE (Links to an external site.).

The deadline to submit any remaining forms for this school year or from the 2019-2020 school year is Friday, June 4, 2021.  Forms are only being accepted online currently at this link (Links to an external site.).  Do not turn in paper copies.  If you have any forms after that date,  you will need to hold them over the summer and submit them once school starts again in the fall.  Baker's SSL coordinator, Mrs. Nelson, is retiring.  Stay tuned late summer or early in the school year for information from our new SSL coordinator.  In the meantime, if you have any questions about SSL in MCPS or need to submit an Individual SSL Request Form after June 4 for a summer service opportunity, visit the MCPS SSL webpage (Links to an external site.) or email the central office SSL unit at ssl@mcpsmd.org.  Have a great summer of service!

Have a great week!  If You Believe, You Can Achieve!
