Project Objectives

The purpose of this project is to increase the capacity of the existing Parkland Middle School and provide program spaces for Grades 6–8 that meet the requirements of the educational specifications. The work includes three small additions. The addition on the front north side of the building will increase the size of the cafeteria to accommodate the increased core capacity of the school. An addition on the west side of the building, adjacent to the adjoining park property, will include an auxiliary gymnasium, health classroom, multipurpose technology laboratories, and general classrooms. An addition to the east, adjacent to the existing school bus drop-off/pick-up area will include science laboratories and a general classroom. Parkland Middle School will remain operational during construction of the new additions. The project will provide a cost-effective, energy efficient, and safe facility to meet the needs of the school. The additions will be in full compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990  and will provide the required teaching spaces and support spaces for the school programs.

Key Elements of the Project Design

The building design goals include the following:

• Provide spaces that facilitate the educational program of the school
• Provide controllable natural daylight into the new teaching spaces
• Provide the safest environment possible for the students and staff
• Provide clear, easily supervised, circulation paths for intuitive and simple way finding

The site design goals include the following:

• Increase the parking capacity, while maintaining the existing site circulation patterns
• Allow improved supervision of site access points and play areas
• Provide good access to fields and play areas from the physical education spaces within the building
• Allow for shared use of fields by the community

• A second gymnasium has been added to align with current MCPS middle school standards.
• Three new Career and Technical Education (CTE) spaces will bolster the magnet program’s resources. 
• Two new science laboratories provide additional space and resources for students to explore and experiment. 
• The expanded all-purpose room includes a mobile serving line.
