French Immersion Program - Elementary Level

Program Description

Language immersion is an educational approach in which students are taught the curriculum content through the medium of a second language. In this way, immersion students not only learn the content, but also gain knowledge of the language in which it is taught.

Would your child like to be able to…

  • Read in a second language?
  • Speak to others in a second language?
  • Solve math problems in a second language?
  • Learn a second language while learning the MCPS curriculum?

Immersion Type

Total

In total immersion programs, children learn their entire core subjects (reading, writing, mathematics, social studies, and science) in the second language. The main difference between an immersion setting and a foreign language class is the approach to second language learning. In an immersion program, language is a method for teaching the content rather than the subject of instruction.

Admission

Local School; Lottery (More about admissions)

Admission to the Foreign Language Immersion Programs is limited.

Selection for the programs is based on a lottery system for students in kindergarten and Grade 1 if requests exceed available program capacity. Admission for all other grades is determined by lottery, language proficiency and available space.

All students wishing to participate in the program must complete an Immersion Interest Form
