Steps to Becoming an Approved Youth Apprentice Sponsor

It is easy to become a Youth Apprentice Program Employer!  If you are interested in becoming a sponsor, please take a few minutes to submit the information requested at the link:

Once your submission is received:

  • A MDoL representative will contact you and walk you through next steps after the form is submitted.
  • Once you have completed the final job description, interested students are vetted and approved to apply for your position.  You will interview student applicants, select candidate of best fit, work with MCPS to complete agreement and training plan, and hire your Youth Apprentice.

Employer Expectations

Businesses must agree to the following:

  • Complete the Eligible Employer Application and receive approval from Department of Labor.
  • Commit to employing and training a youth apprentice for at least 450 hours within a specified period.
  • Develop a training plan for the apprentice with a qualified mentor.
  • Sign a Youth Apprenticeship Agreement.
  • Pay the youth apprentice per the minimum wage law and exemptions.
  • Determine hours the youth apprentice will work and follow all applicable child labor laws.
  • Conduct periodic and regular performance evaluation of the youth apprentice.
  • Provide safety instruction and a safe work environment.
  • Anticipate future entry-level job openings.
